The Rise: A Personal Journey Begins

I dedicate this particular entry to my sisters. They are always there for me, always loving and supporting, listening and advising and being the most beautiful people I know.

Joy. I know this website is all about joy and I truly believe you can find it in almost every nook and cranny in life. However, that does not mean that you will never experience stress, loss, pain or sorrow.

I guess I should take a step back.

In 2015 I lost my mother, Bonita, unexpectedly after routine surgery. Mom was only 59 and was an extraordinary soul with so much life left to live with my sisters, our father and I. After Mom's passing, I knew I lost a piece of myself. It would be impossible to go through such a loss without being profoundly changed. Throughout the last three-plus years, there have been ups and downs, good days and bad ones. People tell you time heals wounds but if I'm honest, time just goes by. Sure, looking at Mom's photo isn't as hard as it was right after I lost her but there are still days it feels like I just came home from the hospital.

About a year after we lost Mom my younger sister saw an ad on Facebook for Danette May, a motivational speaker, nutritionist and personal trainer who helps women all over the world develop healthy habits for their body, mind and soul. After successfully trying her 30-day wellness challenge, which encouraged healthy eating, movement and meditation, we decided to follow her on social media and learn what we could to better ourselves.

In the winter of 2018, Danette May announced that she would be hosting an all women's event called The Rise, in Denver, Colorado. My sister asked if we could go and we decided it was something we had to do together. I'm thrilled to share that we just returned from the event this week and I'm bursting with ideas, inspiration and love.

God blessed us with safe travels and such an incredible experience that it's hard to put into words just how much we obtained from this one weekend. Through a series of speakers, artists and exercises we were challenged to open our hearts, share our fears as well as our greatest dreams, work towards self-love and compassion towards others. Also, just having the time together with my sister, uninterrupted by work, was a blessing. We're all so plugged in now, so distracted by what's happening in our inboxes that we often miss precious moments in life. This weekend, we savored every precious moment and will continue to do so from now on.

As part of our journey, my younger sister and I both signed up for Premium Coaching with Danette May. We can't wait to get started on bettering ourselves and focusing on what matters in our lives. We only just started but I look forward to sharing this experience with you as we move forward. Some details will undoubtedly remain private, I'm a very private person, but if there is something I think could help others I will certainly share what I learn.

Thanks especially to my little sister and one of my best friends for taking me on this incredible journey.
